Before you rent: trailer readiness checklist

This is a free planning guide from JMJ—not a contract, legal requirement, or government form. Run through these six checks to prevent common pickup delays and choose a trailer your vehicle can handle safely.

1. Driver license

Bring a current license that matches the renter completing the reservation. California DMV says a basic Class C license may tow a single vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 lb or less.

2. Vehicle tow rating

Use the rating for your exact year, model, engine and equipment package. Count the loaded trailer, not just its empty weight.

3. Receiver and ball

Match the receiver capacity and the exact ball size stamped on the trailer coupler. The lowest-rated component is your limit.

4. Wiring and brakes

Confirm whether the trailer uses a 4-pin or 7-pin connector. A trailer with electric brakes needs a working brake controller in the tow vehicle.

5. Insurance and payment

Use the booking checklist for the current documents and payment steps required for your specific rental.

6. Load plan

Know the approximate cargo weight and how you will secure it. Keep the load balanced and within the trailer and vehicle limits.
